Jaśminowa Rewolucja is a debut novel written by Sonia Hadj Said in Polish and published by Novae Res in 2015. Following a successful launch, Sonia was invited for a range of radio and newspaper interviews where she talked about the book.
Jaśminowa Rewolucja is a coming-of-age story about a young girl’s journey from a comfortable life in Poland to the South of Tunisia in order to reconnect with her father and find her lost identity in the midst of Arab Spring.
When Jasmine was a little girl, her father decided to go back to his home country, Tunisia, leaving her and her mother behind. Since then, Jasmine vowed to never admit or talk about her father or anything Tunisia related.
Everything worked just fine until sudden news of Jasmine’s father remarrying arrive. Only now, Jasmine is a young woman of nineteen, a jobless university dropout, set on her ways of “wasting life” (as everyone tells her), fighting with her mother, more than content on spending all her time with her grandma, who’s her only friend.
As Jasmine’s rebellious actions catch up with her and a tragic event shakes her entire world, Tunisia presents itself with a great escape. But what’s meant to be a getaway from trouble, might just surprise her as an adventure of a lifetime causing us to question everything we thought we knew about love, family, heritage, stereotypes and politics.
